Abstract:

The aim of this research is to try to determine the perceptions of students studying in different types of high schools about education and the future by associating them with their demographic, social and economic characteristics. In the research, it is tried to reveal that high school types differ on the basis of the reproduction of social classes through the education and life perceptions of students in different high school types. The research was designed in accordance with the phenomenology pattern. With the semi-structured interview form created by the researchers, 33 students attending different high school types were interviewed. In the interviews, it was tried to determine the education and life perceptions of the students in different high school types. Content analysis of the data was done with the NVIVO 12 program. Findings were gathered under categories and themes, taking into account the sub-problems of the research. In the study, it was determined that students in different high school types have different social origins, family characteristics are effective on their education life, and their future life expectations differ according to high school types. High school students are aware that their schools are a stepping stone in providing the life and professions they expect to reach in the future. It has been observed that students from poorer social backgrounds are in vocational-technical high schools and imam hatip high schools, and students with relatively better social origins are in science high schools. It has been observed that the academic success level of the schools in the transition to secondary education exam and the possible returns such as occupation, earnings and social status overlap with each other. Science high school students have higher life expectancies; On the other hand, as the success decreases, the career and life expectancies of the students also decrease.
