Abstract:

Abstract:

Cinematography is a sense-making process for films through a set of technical variables in the process of filming the script. This process steps in in the course of setting the frame so it involves the whole film. Every frame, inevitably, is a result of a cinematographic choice. In films, characters go through certain phases on the matters such as sense of identity, their motivations, righteousness, power and existence, way of recognition et cetera on the principle of the screenwriting theory. This alteration is shown through cinematographic utilization. Therefore, cinematography is a subject that should be analyzed since it affects the net of meaning as well as the development of characters. The book called Film Art, written by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson together, is one of the eligible works written on the analysis of structural cinema. In the study aforementioned, what a cinematographic examination covers is detailed. In Turkish Cinema, Nuri Bilge Ceylan is one of the few directors who use the strong effect of cinematography on their characters. Shooting a scene is designed in a way that it would reflect the situation of the characters in the story. In this paper, a character analysis is achieved through the characters Savcı Nusret from Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Once Upon a Time in Anatolia and Sinan from The Wild Pear Tree by using the method of cinematographic analysis described by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. Thus, it became possible firstly for filmmakers to recognize the cinematographic elements that represent the characters in the process of filming and use those elements effectively, and then for viewers to make a stylistic analysis of characters.
