Abstract:

The interaction between the individual and the society results in sharing and cultural productions. The memory in which the shared and produced products are preserved is cultural memory. Cultural memory is an important role in the formation of society identity. It needs to be transferred to protect this position. Every product, which is the element of cultural memory, is also responsible for the transfer of cultural memory, which is the provider of cultural continuity. This study also examined how the humor newspapers published in the Ottoman Period, using the elements of the tradition, provided cultural continuity. Mizah is one of the elements that provides cultural continuity with its own style of expression and the characteristics of taking over the codes of society from which it comes. Over the course of history, the phenomenon of humor, which is found in rather performance-based verbal cultural productions, has manifested itself in the humorous newspapers with the appearance of written culture in front. In the Ottoman society, the newspapers, especially the humor newspapers, are a newly recognized communication tool for society. The society accepts the innovations by shaping them according to their own world of senses and thoughts. Mizah newspapers have also taken advantage of the tradition by addressing the sense and thought world of society to be accepted in the Ottoman society. The humor style of the traditional kinds of audience, such as Karagöz, meddah, middle game, and the verbal cultural outcomes, such as joke, plot, folk story, appears on the pages of the humor newspapers. The benefit of the Mizah newspapers from the traditional style of humour that is settled in society has made them more rapidly adopted in society. At the same time, humor newspapers have become a tool to ensure the continuity of cultural memory.
