In this work the value system under Nietzsche's nihilism is discussed. In this context, the term “bread” in Wolfgang Borchert's short story “Das Brot” and “The rats sleep at night” is analyzed in the sense of Nietzsche's value system “nihilism”. For the traditional and modern people who live in society, it is kind of a necessity to hold on to some values. The purpose of this work is to show that when there is no bread, which is the common motif of all two works examined, how easily lies can be told (cf. Çöltü, 2014, 444-445). For example, in the short story “Das Brot” by Wolfgang Borchert, the man secretly steals a piece of bread. This behavior is actually known as a theft. It should be emphasized that the man not only steals a piece of bread, but also loses the trust of his wife. If one connects the bread with the value system of Nietzsche nihilism, one can see that the bread symbolizes a decline in value in society. The people who struggled to survive under difficult conditions during the war give bread a new meaning, for which they also resort to a lie. This lie is considered sin and leads to repentance. To get rid of that, people have to create new values (cf. Uluç, 2011, 107). This guilt has made the person feel guilty by losing their attachment to vital values. In this context, Nietzsche regards the suffering discourse as a discourse within decadence (decline) (Nietzsche, 2008, 85-86). The result of this work is that Nietzsche invites people at this point to take responsibility for their own life of their own volition, invites them to stand on their own two feet by avoiding all kinds of addictions and suggests the “superman” as a solution .
