Abstract:

Populism covers the speeches, promises, actions and initiatives of political parties and leaders on domestic and foreign policy in order to gain the support of the widespread public masses. Societies in different regions of the world are exposed to the populist policies of political elites in political, economic and cultural terms. While the populist style of politics becomes an instrument that political actors prefer to gain or maintain power, political actors can or remain in power to the extent they can mobilize the society through populist speech and execution. The character of populism that fits the conditions of the age, leads it from being a national-scale initiative to international and transnational dimensions. In addition, as well as internal policy issues, foreign policy issues are also creating more and more material to populist speech and practice. Trump’s policy and the Brexit process are two outstanding examples of the changing and transforming character of populism. This study focuses on the increasing role of populism in international relations on the one hand, while on the other hand, starting from Trump’s policy and the Brexit process, the public’s political preferences in the direction of internal policy issues, as well as foreign policy issues, are instrumentalized by populist speeches and initiatives.
