Ahmet Midhat Efendi’nin Askerlik ve Savaşa Dair Görüşleri
2020

Author:
Abstract:

Ahmet Midhat Efendi's views on military and war
2020

Abstract:

The Ottoman Empire entering a fast Westernization process with the onset of the Tanzimat Period, was, at the same time, in a constant battle against Western powers. Ahmet Midhat Efendi, who wrote about all sides of Westernization movement, was closely interested in this situation. Ahmet Midhat's Zâbit (1891) and Edvâr-i Army (1891) confirms his deep interest in military service and war. Considering his writings in these books it could be derived that Ahmet Midhat Efendi adapted his views on modern military service and wars from Western sources, and he used such concepts as "soldier-nation" and "social Darwinism", which are mostly associated with militarist thought. Furthermore, he conveyed these views to larger masses by using them intensively in his novel titled Volunteer (1897), which is published after the 1897 Ottoman-Greek War and is one of the first war novels in Turkish literature.
