Çok biçimli bir kavram olan moda bu çalışmada giyim alışkanlıklarının ve süsün gelişimini ve değişimini ima etmektedir. Modanın tek unsuru giyim olmamakla birlikte bu çalışma 19. yüzyıl Osmanlı toplumundaki giyim ve aksesuarlara odaklanmaktadır. Tarihi süreçte moda olgusunun anlam ve muhteviyatının farklılaştığı görülmektedir. Özellikle aksesuar olarak kullanılan ayakkabı, şemsiye, baston, şapka, eşarp ve takılar kişiye aynı kıyafet içerisinde küçük dokunuşlarla farklı bir imaj kazandırdığı için sıklıkla kullanılmaktadır. Bu durum da kişinin daha az para harcayarak görünümünü farklılaştırmasına imkân sağlar. Moda ve süs denildiğinde akla ilk gelen kadınlar olsa da bu çalışmada erkeklerin de modaya bakış açıları ve bazı moda alışkanlıkları üzerinde durulmuştur. Modaya olan farklı bakış açıları ekonomik, dinî, sağlık ve sosyal bakış açılarına göre temellenmektedir. Nitekim çalışmada giyim ve kullanılan aksesuarlar üzerinden dönemin moda algısı ile modanın bileşenlerinden olan kumaş, saç modası, baston modası ile kullanılan aksesuarlardan şapka, şemsiye ve süs eşyaları farklı perspektiflerle ele alınmaya çalışılmıştır. Moda ve süs konusu arşiv evrakından ziyade dönemin basın yayın organlarından takip edilerek ortaya konulmuş ve dönemin gazete ve dergilerinde çıkan moda haberleri temel alınarak hazırlanmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra moda eşyalarının ülkeye gümrüklerden sokulması sırasında karşılaşılan zorluklar konusunda ise arşiv evrakına başvurulmuştur.
Fashion, a multi-form concept, implies the development and change of clothing habits and decorations in this study. Although the only element of fashion is not clothes, this study focuses on clothes and accessories in the Ottoman society of the 19th century. In the historical process, the meaning and magnificence of the fashion phenomenon is seen to be different. The shoes, shams, bastons, hat, shorts and jewellery, especially used as accessories, are often used because they give a person a different image with small touches in the same clothes. This makes it possible for a person to differentiate his appearance by spending less money. While fashion and decoration are the first women to think about, this study also focuses on men’s views of fashion and some fashion habits. The different views of fashion are based on economic, religious, health and social perspectives. In fact, in the study, clothes and accessories used through the fashion perception of the time and the components of the fashion, from clothes, hair fashion, baston fashion and accessories used to cope with different perspectives have been tried to deal with chapes, shelves and decorative objects. The theme of fashion and decoration is based on fashion news from the period’s press publishing bodies and based on fashion news from the period’s magazines and magazines. In addition to the difficulties faced during the import of fashion items to the country from customs, the archive document has been applied.
As a polymorphic concept, fashion refers to the development and change of dressing habits and ornaments in the present study. Although dressing is not the only element of fashion, the study focuses on the clothing and accessories in the 19th-century Ottoman society. The meaning and content of fashion are seen to have differentiated in the course of history. Especially accessories like shoes, umbrellas, walking sticks, hats, scarves and jewellery are frequently used as they give a person a different image with small touches on the same dress. This, in turn, enables individuals to differentiate their appearance with less expense. Although women are the first to come to mind when fashion and ornaments are mentioned, the study also discusses men’s perspectives on fashion and some of their fashion habits. Different perspectives on fashion are based on economic, religious, health and social perspectives. In this context, the study tries to analyse from different points of view the fashion perception of the era based on the garments and accessories used, fabric as a fashion component, hair fashion, walking stick fashion, and accessories including hats, umbrellas and ornaments. Issues relating to fashion and ornaments are explained drawing upon the press organs of the time and specifically the fashion news covered in newspapers and magazines rather than archival documents were drawn on to analyse issues relating to fashion and ornaments. Archival documents are used to shed light on the difficulties experienced when introducing fashion items into the country through customs.
