Abstract:

The hair style and characteristic features of the man's head, of which situation, description and evaluation have been executed respectively showed that the piece could be from the emperor Claudius period. The bifurcation motif on the right of the center of the portrait head is one of the stylistic features of the period of Iulius-Claudian Dynasty. This bifurcation motif in the center of the forehead or just to the right or left of the center of the forehead, has started by the portraits of Augustus, the founding emperor of the Claudian Dynasty, and continued until IVth type portraits of Nero, the last emperor of the dynasty. Along with this stylistic feature in Iznik piece, the characteristic features on the face are also realistically depicted. This helped to date the piece to a definite period within the dynasty. Because there was Roman idealism in the official and private portraits of the Iulius-Claudian Dynasty. This was the beautifying description of the characteristic features of the people who were portrayed. Characteristic features are given realistically only in Claudius portraits and portraits of Claudius period. The realistic depiction of the characteristic features along with the hair style in the studied piece made it possible to date the man head to the Claudian period.
