Abstract:

Child is a special concept created to describe individuals between infancy and adolescence. What makes this concept special is that children are individuals with different developmental characteristics in terms of physical, psychomotor, cognitive, social, emotional, moral, sexual and linguistic aspects. These features determine the scope and limits of the education to be given to the child. In children's education, child literature products are used in order to contribute to their growth and development, their imagination, feelings, thoughts and sensitivities, their tastes, and their entertainment while being educated. In this context, child novels are used functionally to fulfill these purposes. In the research, Edmondo De Amicis's child novel named Child Heart was determined as the object of study. The reason why the aforementioned work is worth examining is that it is one of the best-selling children books both in the world and in our country, contains many uses that can be an example of root values, and is included in the 6th grade Turkish textbook prepared by the Ministry of National Education. In the study, descriptive survey model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The findings obtained from the research showed that the personality traits of the heroes in the work fulfill the role of being a role model in transferring the root values to the children. It was stated that the work contains all of the root values specified in the Turkish Curriculum; among these, it was determined that the root value of "love" was the most and "honesty” was the least.
