Hicri 7. asırda iki büyük medeniyetin sınırında yaşamış, medeniyetten uzak câhilî bir yaşam süren Arap toplumu, İslamiyet’in zuhûruyla büyük bir değişim ve dönüşüm yaşamıştır. İslam öncesi döneme dair yazılı neredeyse hiçbir belge bulunmayan Câhiliye dönemi Arapları, Kur’an-ı Kerim’in ilke ve mesajları ve Hz. Peygamber’in örneklik ve uygulamalarıyla başlayan büyük bir medeniyetin inşasını gerçekleştirmişlerdir. Şüphesiz bu büyük dönüşümde Kur’an-ı Kerim’in daha en başta ilme ve eğitime sevk eden mesajları büyük bir etkiye sahiptir. Kur’an’ın yoğun ilim ve eğitim vurgusu Hz. Peygamber’in uygulamalarıyla hayat bulmuş ve anlam kazanmıştır. “Ben öğretmen olarak gönderildim.” mesajıyla tarafını ilmin ve eğitimin yanında belirleyen Hz. Peygamber gerek uygulamaları ve gerekse vermiş olduğu sözlü mesajları ile sonraki dönemler için büyük bir ilim ve eğitim geleneğinin oluşmasının yolunu açmıştır. İlim talebi yolunda önceki dinlerde eşine rastlanmayacak kadar büyük teşvikler, Müslümanları büyük birer ilim ve eğitim taliplerine çevirmiştir. “İlim Çin’de bile olsa alınız.” hadisi ve benzeri mesajlar İslam eğitim tarihinde önemli bir yer tutan ilim yolculuklarının (rihle) önünü açmıştır. Hatîb el-Bağdâdî de Hz. Peygamber’in mesajlarının bir eğitim geleneği olarak “rihle”ye dönüşmesini aynı isim altında bir eser olarak ortaya koymuştur. Buna göre, ayetlerin ilim vurgusu yanında Hz. Peygamber’in ümmetine ilmi ve eğitimi bir hedef olarak göstermesi, büyük bir ilim ve eğitim geleneğinin oluşmasının zemini olmuştur.
Arabian society, which lived on the border of two great civilizations in the 7th century in an ignorant life away from civilization, experienced great changes and transformations when Islam emerged. The Arabs of the Age of Jahiliyya, who had almost no written document about the pre-Islamic period, built a great civilization that started with the principles and messages of the Qur’an and the example and practices of the Prophet. No doubt, the messages of the Qur’an, which guided people toward science and education in the first place, had great effects on this great transformation. The education-intensive messages of the Qur’an came to life and gained meaning with the practices of the Prophet. With his message, “I was sent as a teacher” the Prophet paved the way for the formation of a great scientific and educational tradition for the following periods with his practices and verbal messages. Unmatched in previous religions, the great incentives on the way leading to the demand for knowledge turned Muslims into great seekers of knowledge and education. The Hadith “Achieve knowledge even if it is in China” and similar messages paved the way for scientific journeys (Rihla), which have an important place in the history of Islamic education. Hatib al-Baghdadi revealed the transformation of the messages of the Prophet into “Rihla” as an educational tradition with his work under the same name. ın this way, in addition to the emphasis of the verses on science, the Prophet’s pointing out science and education to his ummah as a target was the basis for the formation of a great scientific and educational tradition.
