Abstract:

Altough many scientific studies have been done on it, the Historiai of Herodotos is still a source of new studies when carrefully analyzed. The author who called as the“father of the history” by Cicero does not simply narrate the historical knowledge, but he presents incomparable information about the living conditions of the places where he travelled. Notes about daily life, the depiction of the rituals, information of marriage and family life, and for me the most important one is eating and drinking habits are all takeplace in Historiai. Mentioning eating and drinking habits of the nations handled in the books of Herodotos is a great chance for us, as well as it showstheimportancegiventothissubjectbyhim. While wewe reexamining his works, we realized that the eating and drinking habits weres tanding in an important place between the points separate the nations. In his works, he sometimes accuses Massagets and sometimes the Indians of being cannibal, gives the image that it is a degradation, however, he avoids to comment about these situations. Just as Kyklops of Homeros, the easterners of Herodotos are also cannibals, they drink milk and sometimes eat raw meat. Hellens, organize feasts, give presents to gods and each other and they eat cooked food. It is also understood from the Archaic and Classical period resources that Hellens had fine palatal deligh tand were looking for fleshy food. As a result we understand that all of the sethings were considered as the factors determine the civilization line between an Hellen and of not being an Hellen by Herodotos
