Abstract:

The study was conducted to examine the relation between emotional autonomy and social support levels for high school students, as well as the relation between the subscales thereof. The samples of the study are composed of 549 students who are studying in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades of anatolian and vocational high schools, which are located in three different districts of İstanbul province. For the procedures, Emotional Autonomy Scale by Steinberg and Silverberg (1986), and Percieved Social Support Scale, which was developed by Yıldırım (1997), and revised by Yıldırım (2004), were used. In addition, “The Personal Information Form” prepared by the researcher and consisting of questions on demographical variables is used. Results of study showed positive correlations between emotional autonomy and percieved social support. Positive correlations between subscales of emotional autonomy and percieved social support are found. İn examination on the basis of demographic data, it was found that students’levels of emotional autonomy and percieved social support andshowed significant differences with regard to type of school, sex and receive or not receive disciplinary punishment. Also, correlations between age and unexcused school absenteeism, and emotional autonomy and percieved social support (and subscales) were shown.
