There are important differences between the two expressions, namely, nominal sentences and verbal sentences. Many linguists mention only the formal differences between the two. The semantic differences between these two ways of expression are usually neglected. However, these differences are directly related to whether musnad ilayh is in the form of noun or verb, as the musnad ilayh is the main constituent in the sentence structure. The meaning of the sentences differs depending on whether the sentence in question begins with a noun or a verb. The noun sentences express the constancy in the meaning, as the nouns express stableness in the meaning compared to the verbs. Unlike verbal sentences, the nominal sentences consisted of two Marfuʿ names, indicate continuity and constancy. The noun sentences whose predicate is in the form of the verbal sentence, indicate renewal in addition to the stableness and constancy. In contrast to the nominal sentences, the verbal sentences express changeability and instability in meaning, as the verbs do not have stable-ness in meaning. Besides, nominal sentences might have prefixes and suffixes more than verbal sentences do, because the predicate of nominal sentences can be in the form of the verbal sentence too. When the predicate of a nominal sentence is in the form of a verbal sentence, all prefixes, and suffixes that are dependent on the verb take part in the sentence. And the mubtedaʾ, the first component of the nominal sentence, might have prefixes and suffixes too. All these features point to the variety and abundance in the meaning of nomi-nal sentences. Hence, to begin a sentence with either a name or a verb depends on which component of the sentence is wanted to be emphasized. This paper aims to bring into dis-cussion the most significant differences between the nominal and verbal sentences by focusing on the Quranic verses. In doing so, the views of the linguists and mufassirun are also evaluated.
