Abstract Although it is quite recent, the interest generated by Juan Eduardo Zúñiga’s work has been growing in recent years comparable to, but far less acclaimed, the current attention paid to the literary figure of Antonio Pereira. Zuñiga’s Symbolic Realism together with Pereira’s brevity mastery have provided them with the status they deserve within the Spanish literary canon as undisputed masters of the Short Story. Even though their interests and aesthetics are a priori incomparable, this work aims to delve into some key aspects related to spatial symbolism found in “Un ruido extraño” (1963) and “El ingeniero Balboa” (1976) and the supposed reflection of collective memory symbolised represented by the house. In addition, there will be an analysis of cyclical structures in the Madrid trilogy compared with Cuentos de la Cábila (2000), having into account the recent proposals within the Anglo-American and francophone critical area, in order to find bonds between these authors and their most original features in their writings, agreeing or not with the criteria of past generational interests.
