Özellikle 1970’li yıllardan itibaren etkinliği giderek artan “Şikago Okulu”nun Smith’in bu farklı yorumuna kulak verdiğini söylemek mümkün değildir. Buradan hareketle, okulun temsilcilerinden Gary Becker’in “ekonomik yaklaşım” (economic approach) ilkesine odaklanarak söz konusu yaklaşım ile Smith arasında herhangi bir ilişki kurulup kurulamayacağını da çalışmamızın ilerleyen bölümlerinde tartışmaya açıyoruz.
Adam Smith is considered one of the most important founders of today’s economy. My home economy has no difficulty finding references from Smith’s work The Wealth of Nations even today to his own analyses. But Smith has another work, and this work, which is called The Theory of Ethical Emotions, is almost ignored by my grandfather. As one of the most important reasons for this, the differentiation of perceptions about the nature of the individual between the two studies can be shown. In the Theory of Ethical Emotions, the individual is not considered as an actor who seeks a merely personal interest. Here, the individual who pursues personal interests, as well as a individual who demonstrates dedicated, charitable, generous behavior and does not count on others for his personal interest. Although the neoclassical theory has a weak interest in the Theory of Ethical Emotions, the work and the discourses on the harmony/disconformity between the wealth of nations have resulted in a change from a ‘exclastic’ Smith’ interpretation, which is shown as a free-trade partizan, to the social scientist Smith’ interpretation, who is trying to understand the dynamics of social change and in a broad sense. Therefore, in this study we will try to show how Smith designed it as a social being through these features that Smith attributed to the individual. These characteristics are also objects that can distort personal interest by themselves. In our discussion, we will also try to show the role of concepts such as "neutral observer" and "knowledge of yourself" produced by Smith in the process of "socialization" of individual decisions. Especially since the 1970s, it’s impossible to say that the increasing activity of the “Shikago School” has listened to Smith’s different interpretation. From here, we focus on Gary Becker’s “economic approach” from the school’s representatives and discuss whether any relationship between the approach and Smith will be established or not in the advanced parts of our study.
