THE ATTITUDES OF INDIVIDUALS TOWARDS WOMEN’S WORKING AND GENDER ROLES

Abstract:

The concept of sex is defined as a demographic category determined by the individuals’ biology and the concept of gender as the meanings and expectations attributed to being a woman or a man by the society or the culture. Women are mostly considered the society to be responsible for housework, and as mothers, child care. The expectations and meanings attributed to women by the society has not changed with women’s enter in working life. Responsibilities are not equally shared in the family; women are still considered to be responsible for housework and child care. This study aims to determine the attitudes of individuals over the age of 18 who live in Ankara and have different socio-economic levels towards women’s’ working and gender roles. The study included 150 participants selected using simple random sampling method in 2014. The study was conducted via questions on the demographic characteristics of the participants, along with the “Socialization of Gender Norms Scale (SGNS)”, the “Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS)”, and the “Attitude Towards Woman’s Working Scale (ATWWS)”. Of the participants, 55,3% were women and 44,7% were men. This study finds that there was negative relationship between gender roles attitudes and traditional gender roles. Also egalitarian gender roles attitudes and egalitarian gender roles were positively associated attitudes towards woman’s working.
