Abstract:

This research was conducted to examine science textbooks in terms of values. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The material of the research consisted of science textbooks taught in the 2021-2022 academic year. Value expressions in the books were examined based on the 10 core values referenced in the 2018 science curriculum. The data were collected with the value examination form. 89, 105, 175, 69, 76, 157 values were determined in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade science textbooks, respectively. The total number of values is 671. The books have the value of responsibility the most, the values of honesty and patience the least. The value of honesty was not included in the third, fourth and fifth grade textbooks, and the values of justice and honesty were not included in the sixth grade textbook. The distribution of values in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade textbooks, units and learning areas are not homogeneous. The least and most common values found in science textbooks and in the learning outcomes of the science curricula are quantitatively compatible. Based on these results, it can be suggested that science textbooks should be enriched in a balanced way in terms of values.
