Osmanlı Devleti’nde ilk nüfus sayımı II. Mahmud zamanında yapılmıştır. Sadece erkeklerin sayıldığı bu sayımda kişilerin eşkâlleri ve yaşları belirtilmiştir. Bunun dışında bazı kişilerin nereye gittikleri veya nereden geldiklerine dair bilgiler de bulunmaktadır. Giresun’a ait ilk nüfus defterleri 1835-1845 yıllarına aittir. Giresun nüfus defterleri incelenerek ortaya çıkarılan iç göç hareketliliği bu çalışmanın temelini oluşturmuştur. Bu doğrultuda sayısal verilerle birlikte Giresun’a ait nüfus defterlerindeki gelen ve gidenlerden bahsedilmeye çalışılmıştır. Giresun ve ona bağlı idari birimlerden gelen nüfusa karşı giden nüfus büyük oranda fazla olmuştur. Gidilen yerler çoğunlukla Giresun’a civar olan yerler olmakla birlikte Osmanlı coğrafyasındaki uzak memleketlere göç edenler dahi olmuştur. İncelenen dönem itibariyle Giresun göç veren bir bölge konumundadır.
The first census in the Ottoman Empire was made during the reign of Mahmud II. Only male citizens were counted in this census, determining their physical characteristics and age. Apart from this, there is also information about people’s origins and homeland. The first population registers of Giresun belong to the years 1835-1845. Internal migration mobility, revealed in the Giresun population registers, formed the basis of this study. Concerning statistical data, this study discussed the mobility of the people in the Giresun population registers. The study showed that a higher population of Giresun left the region than the incoming one. Although the migration destinations were mostly around Giresun, there were even distant countries in the Ottoman geography. The study concludes that Giresun was a region that gave immigration.
