Abstract:

The aim of the study is to determine the effects of group investigation, jigsaw and reading-writing-presentation methods, which are applications of cooperative learning CL , on the social skills of secondary school 6th-grade students. The study based on pretest/post-test experimental design, was conducted with three experimental groups. These groups were identified as Group Investigation Group GIG, n=30 , Jigsaw Group JG, n=30 and Reading-Writing-Presentation Group RWPG, n=32 . The sample of study consisted of 92 students, studying at 6th-classes of a public secondary school. In each experimental group, the teaching of the unit “Democracy’s Adventure” in the social studies coursebook was carried out by using the mentioned methods in a 5-week-period. In the study, The Social Skills Scale SSS developed by Tunçel 2006 was used as the data collection tool. Pretest-posttest mean scores of the students in experimental groups were analyzed by using MANOVA and ANCOVA. According to the results of the study, all the three methods, GIG, JG and RWPG, are effective on the social skills. However, no significant differences as to which one is more effective than others could be found
