Abstract:

The Lausanne Peace Treaty, which introduced the newly established Turkish State as an independent state in international diplomacy, was signed at the end of long negotiations. One of these long negotiations is the question of what the new position of the Patriarchate and Patriarchate institution discussed in sub-commissions. With the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, the new status of the Patriarchate institution, which has been complimented by Fatih Sultan Mehmet and has been in Istanbul for nearly 500 years, and whether it will stay in Istanbul was discussed among the participating states. The Turkish delegation underlined the negative activities of the Patriarchate during the National Struggle and demanded that the institution be removed from Turkey. However, this request was not accepted by other states. The efforts of the Turkish Delegation to remove the Patriarchate from Istanbul have been inconclusive. The purification of the Patriarchate from its political status, ending the "ecumenical" discussions and ensuring that the Patriarchate can be controlled by the Turkish State have been important achievements. The Patriarchate, as an institution in the Lausanne Peace Treaty, was not made a written decision, the promises made were accepted as deeds, and were concluded with "verbal agreement".
