یُعدُّ اسم الفاعل من أهمّ الأسماء الصَّرفیَّة في اللغة العربية؛ وذلك لاستخدام صیغته في الكلام بكثرة ، فهو حقیقة في الحال ومجاز في الماضي والاستقبال. وهو اسم مشتقٌّ على وزن (فاعل) للدلالة على من قام بالفعل أو ما وقع منه الفعل على وجه الحدوث لا الثُّبوت. وهو يصاغ من الفعل الثُّلاثي على وزن (فاعِل)، ومن غير الثُّلاثي بوزن مضارعه مع إبدال حرف المضارعة ميمًا مضمومة وكسر ما قبل الآخر.
