Abstract:

Although the history of the first censuses in the world is based on a very long history, the history of the first censuses made by scientific methods is quite new. Although censuses were carried out for various purposes in the Ottoman Empire since 1831, these censuses were far from scientific methods. When the Republic of Turkey was founded on the Ottoman legacy, there were no records and data about the country's population, the first general census has been made in 1927 using scientific methods to in order to learn the amount of the current population. For this, the law on the census was enacted in 1926 and the General Directorate of Statistics was established the same year. Camille Jacquart, who is considered one of the leading statistics experts in Belgium for the census, was invited to Turkey and was brought to the head of this institution. In the general census in 1927, belief, mother tongue, gender, marital status, literacy levels, age groups, birth places in order to extract the country's population profile, Various demographic data have been collected under headings such as economic activity areas and disabled population. In this study, detailed information about the demographic structure of Edirne was included, according to the general census results conducted in 1927. The main data source of this study is the results of the General Population Survey published by the Prime Ministry General Directorate of Statistics in three fascicles in 1929, and these results have been subjected to a detailed analysis. Similarly, within the scope of this study has benefited from books, theses and articles published related to the subject
