Historiography, which has ııow becoıııe a fıeld of scholarly stııdy, was fornıerly an effort to nıerely register current eveııts and infornı the coıning generations through tlıe chronicles lıanded down. As a result of hunderds of years' developnıent in the method of tlıinking, there appeared the writers oflocal history amoııg whom were Hecataeus of Miletus, Xantlıus the Lydian, Hellenicııs of Lesbos, Scylax of Caryanda, Clıaron of Lampsacus and Dionysios of Miletus. Xaııtlıus the Lydian, vi'/fo was one of the writer of "The History of Lydia" (Lydiaca). A careful stııdy of the renıaining fragmerıts of the work meııtioned reveals tlıat the aıtthor etıjoyed telliııg tales most of whiclı were not Hellenic. and dealing witlı the geological alterations occuriııg in rural areas. The stıuly of the work, furtlıermore, reveals tlıat Xanthus of Lydia was deeply injluenced by his eontemporary Herodotus and provided the sııcceeditıg writer ofhistoıy witlı the material tlıey needecl.
