Mimari tasarım, mekana dair felsefi, coğrafi, kültürel, toplumsal ve teknik boyutları olan yaratıcı bir faaliyet olarak düşünsel bir süreçtir. Mimari fikrin çok bileşenli doğası onun temsilinde de farklı teknik ve yöntemlerin kullanılmasını gerektirmiştir. Mimarlık, mekan tasarımını ifade eden çeşitli temsil biçimlerini tarih boyunca geliştirmiştir. Modernleşme süreci ile birlikte mimarlık kuram, tasarım ve uygulama alanında görülen değişim mimari düşüncenin temsilini de etkilemiştir. Ancak, İkinci Dünya Savaşı’nın yıkıcı etkileri genç mimar ve sanatçıları etkilemiş ve modernizme olan eleştiriler artmıştır. Yeni Dünya’nın sanat ve mimarlık anlayışı, 1960’lardan itibaren yeni sanatsal tür ve ifade biçimlerinin gelişmesine yol açmıştır. Pop Art ile sanatın konusu haline gelen ancak 1960’lı yıllarda hala sanatsal bir tür olarak kabul edilmeyen çizgi roman türü de dönemin geç kuşağı arasında hızla popülerleşerek hızlı ve etkili bir kitle iletişim aracına dönüşmüştür. Dönemin genç mimarlar kuşağının temsilcilerinden olan Archigram grubu da geleceğe dair kent ve mimarlık düşüncelerini çizgi roman tekniğini kullanarak ifade etmişlerdir. Çizgi romanın Archigram tarafından mimari bir temsil biçimi olarak seçilmesi, temsillerinin kısa sürede popüler hale gelmesi, mimarlık yayınlarından ayrışarak özgünleşmesi mimarlık tartışmalarını etkilemiştir. Bu çalışma, Archigram tarafından oluşturulan temsillerin ortaya çıktığı dönemde fikirlerinin popüleritesi ve günümüzde bu popülerliği korumasının altında yatan etmenin alışılmışın dışında bir temsil biçimi geliştirmiş olmaları fikrinden hareketle şekillendirilmiştir. Bu amaçla çizgi romanın sanatsal bir temsil olarak kabul süreci ve mimari temsil ile kurduğu ilişki Archigram temsilleri üzerinden incelenecektir. Bu inceleme, düşünsel bir ürün olan tasarım fikrinin karşı tarafa etkili bir biçimde aktarılmasında çağın ruhunun önemli bir parametre olduğunu, aynı zamanda temsil araç ve yöntemlerinin teknik bir ifade biçiminin ötesinde kültürel ürünler olduğunu göstermeyi de amaçlamaktadır.
The discipline of architecture has two separate areas of activity. The areas of construction and representation. When it comes to architecture, physical structures come to mind first. In this case, architectural representation is also perceived as a passive tool of the construction process. However, with the development of architectural representation tools and methods, the discipline of architecture has a cultural tool. Architectural representation has become an important area where space design is shaped. As a result of this situation, only projects that remained on paper came to the fore. With the criticism of modernist discourses since the 1960s, both art and architecture entered a very colorful and vocal period. Modern art has adopted a critical stance and rejected the assumptions of traditional art. As a result, the subject and tools of art have transformed. Modern architecture, on the other hand, has not been able to experience this liberation process because it has the responsibility of serving people. In the modern era, architectural representations used methods based on mathematical foundations. However, by rejecting the responsibility of physical productions, new architectures that live only in the field of representation have come to the fore. The Archigram group, which isolated itself from the construction process and produced only in the field of representation, became one of the most popular examples of the 1960s. In the 1960s, the comic book genre was not accepted as an artistic genre due to the reasons such as appealing to children, being a tool of popular culture, being easily understood and consumed quickly. One of the important reasons why comics is not accepted as an artistic genre is that it uses a hybrid type of representation. However, with the use of comic book images by the Pop Art movement that emerged in the 1960s, comic book images were exhibited in art galleries. As a result of this situation, the process of being accepted as an artistic genre has begun. Archigram produced architectural comics in those years when these discussions on the comic book genre continued. Archigram has succeeded in spreading its ideas around the world by using the advantages of comics. These advantages of comics: It can be listed as easy to understand, fast to produce, fast to consume and entertaining. For this reason, they have achieved their goals by using comic book techniques that have no relation with architectural representation. This article is based on the idea that the representations created by Archigram became popular in the 1960s because they used comics. The Archigram group and the Archigram projects are still popular today. For this purpose, the process of accepting the comic as an artistic representation and its relationship with architectural representation will be examined through Archigram representations. This study aims to show that the spirit of the age is an important parameter in effectively conveying the idea of design, which is an intellectual product, to the other party, and that the means and methods of representation are cultural products beyond a technical expression. The change created by the Archigram example on paper is an important indicator for the discipline of architecture, which has used its own tools and methods throughout history.
