Abstract:

İzmir, which has about 10 percent of the largest 500 industrial establishments in our country and about half of the industrial establishments in the Egean region, has an important place in terms of industrial investments. With the presence of rich agricultural areas that exist around the settlement center, the convenient transport conditions have made İzmir a vibrant trading center. The history of industrialization of İzmir, an important trade and industrial city in the Ottoman era, is quite ancient. The spatial organization, which forms the present image, began with industrial investments in the 1930s. The industrialization gained intensity around the port of Alsancak, with time, has been effective in the emergence of new industrial centers in areas such as Halkapınar, Kemeraltı, Şehitler. The new industrial centers that develop along with the structural change of the industry have also shaped the region’s dynamics. Today, the three major generations moving towards the north, south and east districts are the result of the spatial development of the İzmir industry. The reflections of the spatial transformation process in İzmir in the industrial sector have been in the form of the reorganization of the industrial areas outside the center, under the management of other geographical factors, along the main transport corridors. In determining the accumulation trends, the "number of industrial enterprises" was used as a determining variable. In the industrial generation moving to the north, chemistry, iron steel, plastic, machinery manufacturing is in the forefront; in the generation moving to the south, food manufacturing is in the forefront; in the generation moving to the east, machinery parts and various sub-industrial manufacturing are in the forefront.
