Abstract:

The Free Republican Party is the second party in the single-party era. The party, organized in a very short time under the leadership of Fethi Bey, was greatly concemed by the people especially in the coastal cities during the socio-economical problems happened in Turkey of 1930s. Fethi Bey's Aegean expedition made this interest higher. One of the most important places of this expedition was the city of Aydm. The organization of the Free Republican Party was so easy there due to the crowds of people ready for the opposition. It was the Free Republican Party that an important personality of the Turkish political life, Adnan Menderes, started politics at jirst. He became alsa the chief of the party in Aydm. The party which participated in the municipality election only once in a short time after being organized, made a great success than expected in lots of cities, one of which was Aydm. The events, during the municipality election and the election, urged the conjlicts and led to the struggles in public. To calm the uneasy political and social situation down, the Free Party abolished itself and thus, the second attempt to the multi-party system ended in fai/ure. After the abalition of the Free Republican Party, this led to re-gathering of the community by the People 's Republican Party and agreement between this party and the state again.
