Abstract:

As a result of the development of the economic and social structure of the Ottoman economy and the development of the Western movement, the structure of the commercial institutions has also changed. With the establishment of Anonymous Companies, which are an indicator of wealth and development (such as the Company-i Hayriye), different alternatives have emerged in the commercial fields. The Company-i Hayriye has an important place in the commercial life because it was one of the first anonymous companies of the Ottoman era. The company-i Hayriye revealed the growing demand for sea transport in the 19th century as a result of the failure to meet ships, which are the traditional means of transport. The main purpose of this study is to analyze and interpret the financial statements of the Company’s 1888(1303)-1890(1305) period using financial analysis techniques. In the study, one of the first anonymous company examples of the Ottoman State, the Company-i Hayriye's accounting reports were examined and information on the accounting structure of the company was provided.
