Türkler, tarihte demirci bir millet olarak bilinmektedirler. Demiri ve doğal hammaddeleri kullanarak ok-yay, mızrak, kılıç, balta, gürz, kalkan, zırh ve daha birçok silah üretmişlerdir. Türkiye Selçuklu Devleti, silah üretiminde ticaret ve çarşı-pazar üretiminden ziyade, Türk halkının üretiminden faydalanmıştır. Üretilen silahlar, başkentte, önemli şehirlerde ve kalelerde bulunan, zeredhâne adı verilen yerlerde muhafaza edilmişlerdir. Türkiye Selçuklu Devleti sultanı, Ücretli Askerlere ve İktâ Birliklerine silah dağıtımında bulunmak sorumluluğuna sahip olmadığından, bu müessese öncelikli olarak Gulâm Birlikleri’ne hizmet etmektedir. Silah dağıtımı sultanın emriyle bürokratik bir düzen içinde gerçekleşir ve taşıma işleminde de hayvanlar kullanılırdı.
