Bu çalışma, 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısında bölgeye gelen Amerikalı misyoner Southgate’in “Narrative of a Tour Through Armenia, Kurdistan, Persia and Mesopotamia” adlı yapıtındaki Bitlis’e dair gezi notlarına dayanmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı, bu gezi notlarından yola çıkarak anılan dönemde kentin genel yapısını ele alarak değerlendirmek ve böylece kentin tarihinin aydınlatılmasına yönelik kimi katkılar sağlamaktır.
Bitlis is one of the important historical centers of the Eastern Anadolu region, which has a very ancient history. The city is founded in a narrow and deep valley where Bitlis Tea opens between the Southeast Toros, 1400-1500 meters above sea level. Since the southeastern Toros have made it difficult to access the area, the city of Bitlis has made it possible to access and pass the road that has been used for centuries, breaking this mountain and the power of passing it in a relatively narrow area. The geography on which Bitlis is founded, the city has since the oldest times of history become an important place for the transition path of the trade curves. The city is located on an important transition route, 19. In the century, some of those who came to Eastern Anadolu for various purposes became one of the destinations of Western travelers and researchers; travelers and researchers who went to the city made various observations of the city; they made these observations immortal with the travel notes they received. Some of these travelers and researchers from the city are J. Macdonald Kinneir, W. Francis Ainsworth, Baron Eduard Nolde Paul Müller-Simonis, Frederick Millingen, F. Richard Maunsell, C. F. Lehman-Haupt and Austen Layard. This study is based on the American missionary Southgate’s “Narrative of a Tour Through Armenia, Kurdistan, Persia and Mesopotamia” in the first half of the 19th century. The objective of the study is to evaluate the overall structure of the city in the period referred to from these travel notes and thus provide some contribution to the enlightenment of the city’s history.
