Abstract:

Fairy tale, one of the most popular literary genres of all ages and countries, is a form of a narrative that is claimed to contain popular wisdom by virtue of being traditionally embedded in some obstacles which prompt the characters to take action to achieve the goals. By analyzing a wide range of fairytales, Vladimir Propp in Morphology of the Folktales, claims that the narratives of all tales share the identical structural features. Popularly known as Propp's Morphology of narrative structure, this work claims to offer common featured functions to study the narrative proceeding, especially suitable for all types of folktales/fairytales. Considering the popularity of Propp’s morphological model, the present paper tests the suitability of the outlined thirty one functions of morphology of the folktales, by analyzing the two fairytales including The Nightingale and the Rose written by Oscar Wilde and Princess Aubergine written by Flora Annie Steel. The two fairytales are selected considering their diverse socio-cultural and geographical setting. The analysis of the selected stories reveals that the structure of the selected narratives is bound to the thirty one functions as outlined in Propp’s model irrespective of their difference of time, space and socio- cultural conventions
