Kurulduğu dönemde TÜSİAD’ın devlet üzerinde önemli bir güç olarak etkiye sahip olmadığı görülse de bu durum sonraki dönemlerde farklılık göstermektedir. 1970’li yıllarda sadece ekonomi raporları yayınlayan bir iş adamları kulübü niteliğinde olan TÜSİAD 1970’li yılların sonunda siyasal bir güç kazanma çabaları göstermeye başlamıştır. 1980’li yılların başında nispeten ekonomik olarak daha güçlü hale gelen TÜSİAD’ın ekonomik ve mesleki bir kuruluşun kazandığı siyasi özellik 12 Eylül 1980 ve 28 Şubat 1997 askeri darbe süreçleri vaka olarak alınarak incelenmiştir. TÜSİAD’ın kamuoyuna yansıyan görüşleri incelendiğinde iş adamları tarafından oluşturulmuş olan bir derneğin arzu ettikleri ekonomik sistemin oluşumu için bir siyasal bir nitelik kazandığı görülmüştür.
Although it appears that the TUSIAD has no significant influence on the state during its establishment, this situation is different in the subsequent periods. In the 1970s, TÜSİAD, a businessman club that only published economic reports, began to demonstrate efforts to gain political power at the end of the 1970s. The political characteristic of the economic and professional organization of TÜSİAD, which became relatively more economically strong in the early 1980s, was studied by taking as case the military coup processes 12 September 1980 and 28 February 1997. When the opinions reflected in the public of TÜSİAD were examined, it was seen that an association created by businessmen gained a political qualification for the formation of the economic system they wanted.
