Abstract:

The family and relatives of Shaykh al-Islam Feyzullah Efendi, who gained fame as “Feyzullah Efendizâdes” in the Ottoman Empire, served in many different high-level positions of the state. In particular, Shaykh al-Islam Feyzullah Efendi, his son Fethullah Efendi, his grandchildren Mehmet Kamil Efendi and Abdullah Efendi, his grandson's son Mehmet Emin Efendi, and many others were naqib al-ashraf because they were descendants of the HH Prophet. Abdullah Efendi, who was appointed as naqib al-ashraf to organize the pedigrees of sayyids and sharifs and to take care of their affairs, was not exposed to the troubles of his grandfather Shaykh al-Islam Feyzullah Efendi, and his father Shaykh al-Islam Mustafa Efendi. However, the political, social, and sectarian conflicts in the period of his grandfather and father caused different narrations about Abdullah Efendi's lineage and family. In this article, information about Naqib al-Ashraf Abdullah Efendi's scientific career, economic status, and service life is given by discussing his pedigree and heritage. Besides, his pedigree recorded in the Naqib al-Ashraf Registers in the Meshihat Archives, his heritage in the Court of Kısmet-i Askeriye (inheritance court for people with the military status), and the tombstones in the Istanbul Karacaahmet Cemetery were examined. His family members, children, grandchildren, ghilman, jawari, and freedmen were identified by using the information on the tombstones of Abdullah Efendi and his family.
