Abstract:

Thanks to games that use cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills, children not only have fun but also acquire new knowledge. For this reason, interest in game teaching method is increasing. The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of preservice primary school teachers about traditional children's games adapted to mathematics lessons. The data were obtained from 38 fourth grade students at a primary teacher education program in the Aegean Region. Preservice teachers watched videos of the mathematics lessons at primary school classrooms in which traditional games were applied, and they were asked to take notes of their impressions while watching. The opinions of the participants focused more on the learning-teaching dimension. The preservice teachers stated that the games often reach the goals predicted by the curriculum outcomes and they also stated that students learn while having fun. In addition, the participants also stated that traditional games would contribute to primary school students in terms of behavioral and social skills, including cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills. Based on the traditional nature of the games, there are also preservice teachers who think that these games might have cultural contributions.
