Abstract The Ingleses free sedimentary aquifer system is located in the island of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, in the district of Ingleses. This system is a porous non confined aquifer without a waterproof layer. It is responsible for the drinking water supply of 130,000 inhabitants of the northern part of the island of Santa Catarina. This work aims at discussing the environmental risks and the social return of a golf course at local level. Several issues indicated that the enterprise would not be approved: the technical data with clear indications of risk of contamination, the scanty social return of the enterprise for the local community. However, the enterprise received the political support of the City Council of Florianópolis and of the Environment Department (FATMA) for its implantation, remaining the perseverance of popular movement, involved in the aquifer defense, as the only hope for process reversion.
