Her toplumun kendisine ait mitleri vardır. Bu mitler zamanın başlangıcında veya sonrasında gerçekleşen, tanrısal-yarı tanrısal varlıklara ait olaylar hakkında olduğu gibi bir şeylerin kökeni veya nedenini de anlatır. Mitler bu konuları anlatırken de ait olduğu toplum hakkında önemli bilgiler verir. Başlangıçta sözlü olarak aktarılan mitler daha sonra kayıt altına alınır. Böylece zaman içerisinde bazı mitlerin toplumundaki değişikliklere göre ya değişmeden birer anlatı olarak kaldığı ya da yeniden şekillenerek anlatılmaya devam ettiği görülür. Bu konuda Hindu mitolojisi de hem verdiği bilgiler hem de zaman içinde farklı şekillerde anlatılmaya devam ettiğinden dikkate değer bir çalışma alanı sunar. Bu çalışmada Ārilerin Hindistan’a gelmesi, Dravidlerle karşılaşması ve Hindu dini düşüncesinde yeni düşüncelerin çıkması sonucu toplumda meydana gelen değişim Kālikā Purāṇa’da yer alan Satī miti üzerinden gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır. Ayrıca mitlerin özellikleri ve işlevleri açısından söz konusu mit değerlendirilecektir.

Every society has its own myths. These myths may be about events related to divine or semi-divine beings that took place at the beginning of time or after and give information about the origin or cause of something. While myths narrate these subjects, they also give important information about the society to which myths belong. Thence it is seen that according to changes in society, some myths either remain the same as narrative or continue to be told by recomposing in the process of time. In this respect, Indian mythology offers a remarkable field of study as it continues to be narrated in different forms as well as the information it contains. In this study, the changes in the Indian society as a result of the coming of the Āryans to India and the encounter with the Dravidians, as well as the emergence of new ideas in Hindu religious thought, will be tried present through the myth of Satī in the Kalika Purāṇa. In addition, the myth will be evaluated in terms of the characteristics and functions of myths.
