Abstract:

The concept of sustainable development has been on the world agenda especially since the 1970s, as the damage to the ecosystem and the environment has reached serious dimensions. The blue economy is a concept that was introduced after the 2008 Global Economic Crisis, which is based on sustainable development and states that besides making use of the seas and oceans economically, environmental sustainability of the seas, oceans and coasts should be ensured. Blue economy includes activities such as aquaculture and fishing, maritime tourism, shipbuilding, maritime transport, marine energy etc. In this study, Turkey’s blue economy situation is evaluated and at the same time, the problems caused by economic activities in the seas and oceans are discussed. It is considered that especially maritime tourism and aquaculture and fishery are potential activities in terms of Turkish economy. However, while carrying out economic activities, it is important to further develop and implement environmentally compatible policies in order to reduce and prevent damage to the seas and the environment.
