Abstract:

Purpose: The age forecast is of great importance not only for personal identification, but also for the treatment planning in medicine and dentistry. Growth and development are influenced by various factors such as genetic, epigenetic, environmental factors, nutrition and hormonal factors. Therefore, the "biological age" is based on the assessment of the condition of mature tooth and skeletal rather than chronological age while studying the maturity of individuals. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between chronological age and dental and skeletal age and to determine whether there is a correlation between them. Tools and Methods: 78 patients (10.42-16.5 years of age) were studied with hand-hand graphs and panoramic radiographs. The Williems method for dental age determination, and the Fishman method for skeletal age determination, was used. In comparison of the scellular age and chronological age average, there was no statistically meaningful difference in the patient group of women (women p=0.906, men p=0.041). In comparison of dental age and chronological age, there was no difference in both gender groups (p>0.05). There is a positive correlation between both the chronic age and the skeletal age and the dental age in both gender groups. There is also a positive correlation between dental age and skeletal age. This study shows that there is a strong relationship between chronological age and the methods of evaluation of both dental and skeletal structure. Reflecting the possibility of chronological age forecast, the detection of dental and skeletal age is also important in the study of the person’s maturity status and growth development pattern.
