Dinin anlaşılması noktasında farklı siyasî, itikadî, ictimâî, iktisadî, coğrafî ve tarihî faktörlerin etkisiyle meydana gelen farklılaşmaların sistematikleşmesi ve kurumsallaşarak düşünce tarihinde derin izler bırakması neticesinde mezhep dediğimiz beşeri oluşumlar ortaya çıkmaktadır. Ehl-i Sünnet ise İslam’ın itikadî ve amelî sahadaki düşünce ekolleri şeklinde tanımlanan mezhep kavramının sınırlarını, itikadî, fıkhî ve tasavvufî boyutta farklı bileşenleri barındıran şemsiye kavram ve üst kimlik olması sebebiyle aşmaktadır. Hâricîlik, Mürcie, Şîa, Mu’tezile, Eş’arîlik ve Mâtürîdîlik gibi hakkında fazlaca araştırma yapılan mezheplerin dışında geçmişte ve günümüzde pek çok çalışmaya konu edilen, belirli bir zaman, mekân ve şahısla sınırlandırılması zor bir yapı olarak Ehl-i Sünnet ile ilgili akademik mecrada pek çok eser yayınlanmıştır.
At the point of understanding of religion, the differences that occur under the influence of different political, religious, economic, geographical and historical factors are systematized and organized by leaving profound traces in the history of thought, as a result of human formations that we call religious.
