Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between addiction severity, distress tolerance and impulsivity in substance use. This study is a cross-sectional study conducted with the relational screening method. The sample of the study consists of 233 voluntarily participating individuals aged 18 years and over who are being treated at YEDAM and Elazığ Mental Health and Mental Illness Hospital, selected using the purposive sampling technique. Socio-Demographic Information Form, Addiction Profile Index, Distress Tolerance Scale and Barratt Impulsivity Scale-Short Form were used as data collection tools. In the findings of the study, significant negative correlations were found between the mean scores of tolerating distress and addiction profile index scores, and significant positive correlations were found between impulsivity scores. Accordingly, it was found that as the level of tolerating distress increased, the level of addiction decreased while the level of impulsivity increased. It was found that as the addiction level of the participants increased, the level of attention impulsivity decreased. In this context, it may be recommended to implement psychological interventions to increase patients' ability to tolerate distress during addiction treatment.
