Bu çalışmanın amacı NATO’nun Balkanlardaki genişleme sürecini analiz etmektir. NATO 4 Nisan 1949 yılında 12 ülkenin Kuzey Atlantik Antlaşmasını imzalaması sonucunda kuruldu. İttifakın kuruluş amacı SSCB ve Komünizme karşı mücadele etmekti. Kuzey Atlantik İttifakı 1949 yılından 2020 yılına kadar belli aralıklarla toplam 9 genişleme süreci yaşadı. Kurulduğunda üye sayısı 12 olan NATO’nun günümüzde üye sayısı 30 ülkeye yükseldi. NATO’nun Balkanlarda genişleme stratejisini benimsemesi Doğu Blokunun 2 büyük federasyonunun dağılması sonrası oldu. SSCB ve Yugoslavya federasyonu dağıldığında Balkanlarda ve Doğu Avrupa’da bir güç boşluğu oluştu. Bu güç boşluğu NATO tarafından dolduruldu. NATO neden genişleme ihtiyacı hissetti? Batı Avrupa ülkelerinin ve diğer NATO üyelerinin genişleme stratejisi karşısında tutumları nasıldı? Balkanlarda bulunan 12 tane Balkan devletinden kaç tanesi NATO’ya üye oldu ve bu üyelik süreçleri nasıl gelişti ve sonuçlandı? Rusya, NATO’nun Balkanlarda genişlemesi karşısında nasıl bir politika izledi? Makalede bu sorulara cevap arandı. Ayrıca tüm Balkan ülkeleri ile NATO’nun ikili ilişkileri üzerine ayrıntılı analiz yapıldı.
The aim of this study is to analyze NATO’s expansion process in the Balkans. NATO was established on 4 April 1949 as a result of the signature of the North Atlantic Treaty by 12 countries. The purpose of the alliance was to fight the Soviet Union and the Communism. The North Atlantic Alliance experienced a total of nine expansion processes between 1949 and 2020. The number of members of the NATO, which was 12 when it was established, has now increased to 30 countries. NATO adopted its expansion strategy in the Balkans after the dissolution of the two major federations of the Eastern Block. When the Soviet Union and the Yugoslav Federation were split, a power gap was formed in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. This power gap was filled by NATO. Why did NATO feel the need for expansion? How did the Western European countries and other NATO member states take their attitudes towards the expansion strategy? How many of the 12 Balkan states in the Balkans have become members of the NATO and how have these membership processes evolved and ended? What is Russia’s policy against NATO’s expansion in the Balkans? In the article, the answers to these questions were sought. There was also a detailed analysis of the bilateral relations between all the Balkans and NATO.

The foundation purpose of the alliance was to struggle the USSR and Communism. The North Atlantic Alliance made a total of 9 expansions at regular intervals from 1949 to 2020. When NATO was established, it had 12 members. Today, the number of members has increased to 30 countries. NATO's adoption of the expansion strategy in the Balkans occurred after the dissolution of the two major federations of the Eastern Block. When the USSR and Yugoslav federation dissoluted, there was a power gap in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. This power gap has been filled by NATO. Why did NATO feel the need for expansion? What was the attitude of Western European countries and other NATO members towards the expansion strategy? How many of the 12 Balkan states in the Balkans became members of NATO and how did these membership processes develop and end? What policy did Russia pursue against NATO's expansion in the Balkans? The answers were sought to these questions in this article. In addition, a detailed analysis was made on the bilateral relations of NATO and all Balkan countries.
