Aile toplumun en küçük yapı taşını oluşturur. Ailedeki sıkıntılar topluma, toplumdaki sıkıntılar aileye yansır, bununla birlikte; sağlıklı aileler sağlıklı toplumu oluşturmakta önayak olur. Toplumun sosyokültürel durumu, ailenin sosyokültürel durumu belirler. Toplum ve aile iyilikte ve kötülükte devamlı bir şekilde, etkileşim içerisindedir.
Toplumlar ailelerin bir araya gelmesiyle oluşur. İnsanlık tarihi, geçmişten bu yana, uzun çağlardan beri topluluklar hâlinde yaşar. Zaman içinde aile kavramında bir değişiklik oluşmamış, yalnız ailenin üyelerinde ve üyelerin görevlerinde bazı değişimler söz konusu olmuştur. Endüstri devriminden önce yaygın olan geniş aile türü, endüstri devrimi sonrasında yerini yalnızca çekirdek aile dediğimiz anne, baba ve çocuklara bırakmıştır. Bunun yanısıra, aile türlerinde, yerleşim yerlerine göre de farklılıklar oluşmuştur. Birbirlerinden farklı aile türleri söz konusu olmakla birlikte hangi aile türü olursa olsun, ailenin fonksiyonları, yaşam dönemleri, bireylerinin görev ve sorumlulukları her zaman var olmuştur.

The sociocultural situation of the society determines the sociocultural situation of the family. Society and family are in constant interaction, for good and evil.
Societies are formed by families coming together. Humanity has lived in communities since ancient times. There has been no change in the concept of family over time, but there have been some changes in the members of the family and their duties. The extended family type, which was common before the industrial revolution, was replaced by only the mother, father and children, which we call the nuclear family, after the industrial revolution. In addition, there were differences in family types and settlements. Although there are different types of families, regardless of which type of family it is, the functions of the family, its life periods, and the duties and responsibilities of its members have always existed.
