Abstract:

2 no.lu yazıt dışında tümü dörtgen bomos tipi heykel kaideleridir ve Roma İmparatorluk dönemine tarihlenmektedirler. 1 no.lu yazıt imparator Commodus’un ömür boyu başrahibi, Asia başrahibi ve Smyrna’daki tapınakların neokorosu olan Lucius Claudius Lepidus’a aittir. 3 no.lu yazıtta, ephebos olan Philiskos onurlandırılmaktadır: “Vatanı, Philiskos oğlu, ephebos Philiskos’u (onurlandırdı).” 4 no. lu yazıt ise vatanı tarafından onurlandırılan stephanephoros Neikostratos’a aittir: “Vatanı, Dionysios oğlu, stephanephoros Neikostratos’u (onurlandırdı).”

2023
Journal:
GEPHYRA

Abstract:

This article discusses four honorary letters found in the ancient city of Aizanoi during the 2021 and 2022 mining seasons. Except for the letter No. 2, all of them are quadrangular bombos-type statue cades and dates to the Roman Empire period. The letter No. 1 belongs to Emperor Commodus' lifelong prince, Asia prince and the Neocorus of the temples in Smyrna, Lucius Claudius Lepidus. It dates to the third quarter of the 2nd century after Jesus. Lepidus, in Aizanoi, is honored with a series of statue cades as stephanephoros and agonothetes. They were known for what was done by Herakleia and Hadrian philes. With this new post, the Asklepias phylesi is also joined among the Aizanoi phyles who honored Lepidus. Asklepias phylesi was the first phyle to be found in the theater in 2020. The translation of the book is as follows: “Good! Asklepias phylesi, the Archineokoros of the Emperor and the lifelong priest, the Principal, the Prytanis of the City, the Principal of temples in the bright city of the Smyrnalists, the charitable L(ucius) Cl(audius) Lepidus (honored), who was appointed as stephanephoros and agonothetes by his hometown. The Phylarkhos were the son of Appuleius, Artemidoros, and the son of Philokalos, Iulianus. Lu writings is the honour of the (---)nios, who served as khreophylakes, by the Parliament and the People. The Khreophylakia office is among the leading offices in Aizanoi and appears to us in the honorary letters of the city’s elite citizens. The translation of the scriptures is as follows: "The Council and the People, the grandson of Kleon, the son of Demetrios (----)nios, who has served twice as khreophylakes, (good and?) He is honestly in the mission of strategos and all of them (the charities?) He was honored.” 3 and 4. Lu writings are bombos-type sculptures and are contemporary. Both letters are of those honored by ἡ πατρὶς. In chapter 3, the ephebos is honored by Philiskos: "His homeland, the son of Philiskos, the ephebos Philiskos (honored)." 4 is no. The script belongs to stephanephoros Neikostratos, who was honored by his homeland: "His homeland, Dionysios' son, stephanephoros Neikostratos (honored)."

New Honorary Inscriptions From Aizanoi
2023

GEPHYRA

Abstract:

In this paper, four new honorific inscriptions from Aizanoi are presented. All of the inscriptions have been found in Çavdarhisar during the excavation seasons of 2021 and 2022 and excluding n. 2, the stones are rectangular bomos-type statue bases. Inscriptions are dated to the Roman Imperial Period. N.1 is the honorary inscription of Lucius Claudius Lepidus who was the life-long high priest of the emperor in the reign of Commodus. He was the chief priest of Asia and the neokoros of the temples in Smyrna. The inscription was erected by the phyle Asklepias, the name of which first came into light due to the excavations in the theater in 2020. N. 2 is a honorific inscription of a chreophylakes whose name is unfortunately missing. Chreophylakia was a prominent public office in Aizanoi, as seen in the honorific inscriptions of the city’s elite citizens. N. 3 and n. 4 are rectangular bomos-type statue bases. Both of them are honours of the “πατρίς”. Although ἡ πατρὶς occurs frequently in the inscriptions of Aizanoi, it was in the nominative case in only two published examples. N. 3 belongs to Philiskos, son of Philiskos, the ephebos. Finally, n. 4 is the statue base of Neikostratos, son of Dionysios, the stephanephoros, honoured by his fatherland.
