Abstract:

People create built environments for their living spaces. The nature, which has hosted various civilizations from the past to the present, has started to be negatively affected by this built environment over time. The main reasons for this are industrialization, rapid population growth, and people's thinking that they can control nature with the development of technology. However, these negative effects have reached a level that threatens not only the nature but also the life of people. In this context, It can be said that, because of this point of view, nature-oriented design paradigms such as sustainable and ecological designs have emerged. As a new paradigm of all these paradigms, biomimicry which can be called as the science of inspiration from nature, has also been introduced to the literature. Like other design theories, biomimicry can be used by many disciplines. Biomimicry design methods can offer solutions to the problems in spatial designs within the framework of sustainability and ensure that spatial designs are more original. In this study, the theoretical development of the biomimicry approach in the literature was examined and its relationship with the urban planning discipline was questioned. Also, how biomimicry could contribute to sustainability in new urban planning processes that would shape the future is discussed.
