Güney Kafkasya stratejik konumu dolayısıyla tarih boyunca büyük güçlerin dikkati çekmiş ve bu nedenle de söz konusu devletlerin nüfuz mücadele alanı içinde kalmıştır. Güney Kafkasya coğrafyasının bir parçası olan Azerbaycan hem bölgesinin sahip olduğu jeostrajik açıdan hem de kendi topraklarının konumu açısında büyük bir öneme ve jeostratejik konuma sahiptir. Güney Kafkasya hem coğrafi konumu hem de sahip olduğu doğal kaynaklar itibariyle stratejik bir yapı arz etmektedir. Güney Kafkasya, Asya ile Avrupa birleştiren bir geçit olduğu gibi İslam ve Hristiyan medeniyetinin kesiştiği bir bölge özelliğini de taşımaktadır. Asya-Avrupa arasında bir köprü oluşturan ve kültürlerin kesiştiği önemli bir kavşak noktası olan Güney Kafkasya verimli tarım arazileri yanında doğal gaz, petrol ve demir cevheri gibi madenler bakımından zengin kaynaklara da sahip bulunmaktadır. Enerji tüketimi, petrol ve doğalgaza bağımlılığı giderek artan dünyada petrolün kullanım alanlarının hızla artması nedeniyle dikkatler Kafkasya’ya çevrilmiştir. Bu zenginliğin işletilmeye başlanması, Kafkasya’da kısa zamanda akla durgunluk verecek değişikliklere neden olmuş ve bölge bütün dünyada tanınmaya başlamıştır.

The beginning of this wealth’s exploitation has caused changes that will soon make the mind stable in the Caucasus and the region has begun to be recognized worldwide.
