Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to investigate the images of the scientists working in the field of chemistry of teachers candidates and the factors affecting these images. For this purpose, the research was carried out at a state university in the Anatolian Region within the 2017-2018 educational year. Research, painting business, science knowledge, primary mathematics, social information and guidance and psychological counseling are carried out on the basis of the mixed methods in the fields of maternity. A total of 271 teachers from third and fourth classes participated in the study. The study used the DAST (Scientist Chart) test to identify the mental images of teachers candidates about a scientist working in the chemistry field. Teachers' candidates were asked to make them think of how the scientist working in the chemistry field, what this scientist is doing, by detailing their thoughts as much as possible. In the analysis of the drawings of the teaching candidates, two different scientists’ drawing control lists were used. The analysis of the quality data not included in the drawings of the teachers candidates but obtained from the descriptions of their drawings was done through content analysis. The results of the analysis have shown that the images of the scientists working in the chemistry field of the teacher candidates are combined with the perception of the traditional scientist. Social information has also concluded that the images of the scientists working in the chemistry field of teachers candidates statistically significantly differ from the other department teachers candidates.
