Abstract:

Remakes are one of the forms of narration that both the Hollywood film industry and the cinemas of other countries often use. The framework of this study is limited with the cross-cultural analysis of the remakes that adapted to the local culture by purchasing screenplay rights and especially the ones seen late 2000s in Turkish cinema. The sample of the study is set as Miracle in Cell No.7 (2013) for South Korean Cinema and 7. Koğuştaki Mucize (2019) for Turkish Cinema as a remake. The repetitive story of these two narratives produced in two different histories and geographies with time, place and cultural difference was analyzed comparatively and questioned how the remake was adapted to the local culture. It has been observed that there are differences as well as similarities in the narratives of these two films, which essentially present a universal narrative by focusing on the love of a disabled father and his daughter, but also deal with themes such as justice, the pressure of the official authority, and the death penalty. The characters of the original movie are replaced by the characterization of Anatolian people, the story is relocated to the coastline of Aegean region and timeline was adapted to a period after 1980 Turkish coup d'état. Thus, although it is a derivative film narration, it has become authentic as well. However, it has been seen that elements such as the devastating consequences of the death penalty application and the continuation of the search for justice, which are strongly present in the narration of the original film, are trivialized in the remake.
