Abstract:

There are many sources written about the biography of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi, the establishment and spread of Mevleviyeh. One of the most important of these works is Sipehsâlâr Ferîdûn b. Ahmed's Risâle-i Sipehsâlar, and the other one is Ahmed Eflakî's Menâkıbü'l-ʻÂrifîn. Apart from these, Terceme-i Sevakıb, in which Mevlana and the notables of the period are told, has a special place in terms of translated into Turkish. Dervish Mahmud translated Sevâkıb-ı Menâkıb-ı Evliyâullah, which he wrote in Persian, based on Abdülvehhab Hemedânî's book Menâkıbü'l Ârifîn, into Turkish under the name Terceme-i Sevâkıb in H 998 (1590). Translated from Persian to Turkish, this work shows many characteristics of the Classical Ottoman Turkish period, besides including elements of Old Anatolian Turkish. Although Arabic and Persian words are intense in the text, the work is of great importance in terms of Turkish vocabulary, since there are many words that are not used in standard Turkish today. The work also contains many characteristics such as orthographic characteristics, alternations of case suffixes, different usages according to the period, idioms, dualities seen in the writing of words and suffixes. In this study, after introducing Terceme-i Sevâkıb briefly, the translator, copies, vocabulary, language, and style of the work will be emphasized. The language characteristics of Terceme-i Sevâkıb (spelling, sound, morphological characteristics) will be examined item by item.
