Harvey’ye göre mekânsal farklılaşma, kapitalist toplumdaki toplumsal ilişkilerin yeniden üretimi çerçevesinde yani toplumsal farklılaşma ile izah edilmelidir. Toplumsal farklılaşmaya ise üç öğe neden olmaktadır. Bunlardan birincisi; endüstri devrimiyle birlikte emek-yoğun üretim biçiminden sermaye-yoğun üretim biçimine geçilmesidir. Harvey ikinci öğeyi, kapitalizmin gelişim süreci içerisinde yarattığı toplumsal farklılaşmaya ivme kazandıran bir dizi unsur olarak açıklar. Bunlar; fonksiyonel uzmanlaşma ve emeğin bölünmesi, otorite ilişkileri, ideolojik ve politik manipülasyonlar ve toplumun hareket alanına konulan engeller olarak özetlenebilir. Üçüncü olarak Harvey, daha önceki bağımlı üretim biçimi içinde kurulmuş toplumsal ilişkileri içeren birçok öğeyi saymaktadır. Harvey’e göre üçüncü öğeyi, kapitalist düzen ve öncesi arasında çatışmaya neden olan toplumsal olguları sıralayarak genişletmek mümkündür. Söz konusu üç öğeden dolayı ortaya çıkan farklılaşma toplumu ve kenti, mekânsal farklılaşmaya taşımaktadır. Mekânsal farklılaşma, pek çok alanda bir ayrışmaya yol açan ve döngü halini alan bir ayrımlaşmanın tezahürüdür. Harvey bu tezahürü, piyasa birim ve donanımlarına erişebilmek için elzem kıt kaynaklara ulaşım imkânlarındaki farklılaşma olarak açıklar. Kentler, her bir sınıfın kendisini kendi içinde idame ettirdiği komşuluk birimlerine ayrılabilir. Başka bir ifadeyle; her bir toplumsal statü birimi, gruplaşma oluşturarak mavi yakalılar ve beyaz yakalılar şeklinde farklılaşmış mekânlarda yerleşebilir. Böylece bir sonraki kuşağın ekonomik mekânının da aynı statüye sahip olacak biçimde yapılanmasına neden olabilir. Mekânsal farklılaşmanın izahı açısından bireylerin seçimleri, tercihleri, değer sistemleri de önemli bir yer tutar. David Harvey, tüm bunların bireyin kendi iradesi dışında şekillendiğini savunur. Çalışmada, David Harvey'in mekansal farklılaşma kuramı ve bu kurama yönelik olarak dile getirilen eleştiriler analiz edilmiştir.
According to Harvey, spatial differentiation must be explained in the framework of the re-production of social relations in the capitalist society, i.e. by social differentiation. Social differences are caused by three factors. The first of these is the transition, along with the industrial revolution, from the form of labour-hard production to the form of capital-hard production. Harvey explains the second element as a series of elements that drive the social differentiation that capitalism creates in the development process. These can be summarized as functional specialization and division of labour, authority relations, ideological and political manipulations, and obstacles to the sphere of society’s movement. Thirdly, Harvey counts many elements that include social relationships established within the previous dependent form of production. According to Harvey, it is possible to expand the third element by classifying the social facts that lead to conflict between the capitalist order and the predecessor. Spatial differentiation is a manifestation of a differentiation that leads to a separation in many areas and takes a cycle. Harvey explains this manifestation as a differentiation in the possibilities of transport to low-source resources to access market units and equipment. Cities can be divided into neighbouring units in which each class exercises itself within itself. In other words, every unit of social status can settle in different places in the form of blue and white capes by forming a grouping. This may result in the construction of the economic space of the next generation in a way that will have the same status. In terms of the interpretation of spatial differentiation, individual choices, preferences, and values systems also hold an important place. David Harvey claims that all of this is formed outside the individual’s will. The study analyzed David Harvey’s theory of spatial differentiation and the criticism of this theory.
