Abstract:

Students spend a large part of their time in schools. They will spend thousands of hours at school when they complete the compulsory education. The same applies to teachers and managers. Teachers and managers prefer to adhere to the existing arrangement rather than to design or organize the educational-learning environments in a way that will activate the student, bring students to a learning process where the traditional understanding is dominated, where the teacher is at the center. John Dewey (1859-1952), however, suggested that education should be based on a wider concept, which means the life process that students will learn by doing-living and interacting with each other. by Alexander, 2000). But similar classes along the long corridors are still seen as an important part of education and teaching (Sanoff and Walden, 2012). In school design, appropriate theories and approaches that may be useful to students should be taken into account. The elements explained by these theories can be used in school design. Such a design will undoubtedly be more different from today’s school designs. Because the educational approaches that focus the student and support their individual development have not yet been fully reflected in the school designs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to make conclusions about some of the students-centered theories and how appropriate physical spaces should be. The findings obtained by the literature scan will be displayed on the table. In accordance with the results obtained, design recommendations for student-centered learning environments are given.
