Osmanlı modernleşme sürecinde basın önemli bir rol oynamıştır. 19.yy’da meydana gelen toplumsal, kültürel ve siyasal dönüşümlerde kendini açığa buran bu durum, özellikle 1860’lardan sonra daha belirgin bir hale gelmiştir. Önemli aydınlar, çeşitli dergi ve gazetelerde modernleşme yönünde fikirler ortaya koymuş ve ayrıca basında kültürel hayatın yeni formları hızlı biçimde yayılmaya başlamıştır. Fakat bu dönüşümün gerçekte, Tanzimat Fermanı’nın 1839’daki ardından başlamış olan bir arka planı vadır. Bu bağlamda Osmanlı Devleti’nde ilk yarı-özel gazete olan Ceride-i Havadis önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu çalışmada Ceride-i Havadis gazetesinin 1840-1850 yılları arasındaki yayınları incelenmek suretiyle, 19.yy’da Osmanlı modernleşmesine olan muhtemel etkileri gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu amaçla gazetede çıkan haberler ve yazılar, iki başlık altında ele alınmıştır. Birinci bölümde 1860’lardan sonra öne çıkacak olan siyasal gelişmelerin arkaplanına ışık tutabilecek haber ve yazılar irdelenmiştir. Özellikle temel bazı siyasi kavramların Osmanlı düşünce dünyasına 1840’dan itibaren nüfuz etmeye başladığı ortaya konulmuştur. İkinci olarak ise toplumsal ve kültürel hayata ilişkin haber ve yazılar ele alınmıştır. Bu bölümde yeni tüketim ve yaşam biçimlerine odaklanarak, Ceride-i Havadis’in bu bağlamda öncü bir rol üstlendiği, çeşitli örnekler üzerinden gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın temel amacı, 19.yy’da Osmanlı modernleşmesinin erken aşamalarında Ceride-i Havadis gazetesinin yerini gösterebilmektir. Böylece 1860’dan sonra görünürlük elde eden Osmanlı modernleşme dinamiklerinin, aslında belirli bir birikimin ve sürecin sonucu gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır.
Press has played an important role in the process of modernization. This situation, which has revealed itself in the social, cultural and political transformations that occurred in the 19th century, has become more evident, especially after the 1860s. Important illuminates have shown ideas about modernization in various magazines and newspapers, and new forms of cultural life have also started to spread rapidly in the press. But in fact, this transformation is a background that began after Tanzimat Ferman in 1839. In this context, Ceride-i Havadis, the first semi-private newspaper in the Ottoman State, has an important place. In this study, by studying the publications of the Ceride-i Havadis newspaper between the years 1840-1850, it was tried to show the potential effects of the Ottoman modernization in the 19th century. The press played major role in the process of the Ottoman modernisation. This phenomenon which manifested itself in the social, cultural and political transformations in the empire during 19th century came to the fore especially after 1860s. When the prominent intellectuals revealed their ideas on this great transformation (later-called modernisation/westernisation) in many periodicals and journals, new cultural forms also began to be spread by press at the same time. This transformation had, indeed, a background started after promulgation of the Tanzimat Edict in 1839 and in this context Ceride-i Havadis as the first semi-private journal had an important place. Analysing the collections of Ceride-i Havadis between 1840 and 1850, this article intends to demonstrate its probable influences on the Ottoman modernisation in 19th century. For this purpose, the news and the writings that were published in the journal are examined under two topics. In the first chapter, the news and the writings that might shed light on the backgrounds of political developments in the empire after 1860s are discussed and particularly some political concepts are analysed. Second chapter is dedicated the news and the writings related to cultural and social life. Focusing the penetrating of new forms of life and consuming culture into Ottoman world, this chapter tries to display the leading role of Ceride-i Havadis in this change. Main purpose of the study is to designate the spesific place of Ceride-i Havadis at the earlier stages of the Ottoman modernisation. Therefore, it becomes more clear that the dynamics of Ottoman modernisation which became more apparent after 1860 were to some extent the consequence of a cumulative process.
